Women’s Basketball defeated by West Virginia, 53-49


MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Texas Women’s Basketball team dropped a 53-49 decision to West Virginia in a Big 12 Conference game on Wednesday night in Morgantown.  


The Longhorns (7-7, 0-3 Big 12) got career efforts from freshmen Empress Davenport (14 points) and Celina Rodrigo (nine rebounds) but were unable to overcome the Mountaineers(9-5, 1-2 Big 12) in the teams’ first conference meeting.


UT outrebounded its 11th opponent of the season with Imani McGee-Stafford leading the way.  The freshman center had a game-high 13 rebounds, grabbing 10 in the first half.  However, Texas shot just 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the field.


The teams exchanged leads early on until the Mountaineers sparked a 9-2 run to build a lead before the midpoint of the first half.  West Virginia was ahead by as many as nine on two occasions before Texas used a 6-0 run of its own to bring the score to 23-20 at the 3:22 mark.  The Mountaineers led by six heading into the break.


The Longhorns opened the second half with a 5-0 run and grabbed their first lead in just under 20 minutes of play.  Texas held the lead over a nearly seven-minute stretch until West Virginia took went ahead with6:05 left in the game.  UT was down just one with 35 seconds on the clock following a pair of made free throws by Davenport but could not convert from the field down the stretch.


Ayana Dunning had 19 points to pace West Virginia and Christal Caldwell added 17.


Texas will host Oklahoma State on Sunday, Jan. 13.  The game will be televised nationally by FSN with tip time set for 11:30 a.m.
