Woman Hits Jackpot But Doesn't Get Paid Due To Casino Error

A Washington D.C. woman is fighting officials at MGM National Harbor in Maryland after their mistake cost her a large jackpot. Cynthia Obie won thousands of dollars while playing the slot machines at the casino, but when she went to claim the prize a worker made a typo while entering her social security number into the system.

As a result of the typo, officials had to deny Obie her winnings because the owner of the incorrect social security number owed the state of Maryland a large sum of money in child support.

“I’m like, 'No. All of my daughters are grown. I’ve never paid child support.' I’m like, 'This can’t be right,'” Obie told Fox5DC.

The casino refused to relent and told her she needed to sort the issue out with the state's Human Services Agency. Obie spent over an hour at the agency's office but left with no answers.

MGM told her that the issue was out of their hands and that she must go to the offices of the Gaming Control Agency to claim her prize. They issued a statement blaming "Maryland State Law" for their inability to pay her the money that she won.

“We are aware of this unfortunate error and have taken the necessary steps to assist Ms. Obie in rectifying this issue. Due to MLGCA rules and Maryland State Law, we cannot provide an additional payout for this jackpot, however, if she presents the proper identification credentials to the Maryland Gaming Commission, they will provide her with the appropriate payout. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused Ms. Obie.”

“Now I’m at the point, this is insane. You guys are a billion-dollar corporation," she said. "You do the research: I won fair and square. I just want my money."
