Spurs Top Pacers 118-111

The Spurs beat the Pacers 118 to 111 in the final scrimmage tune-up before the regular season resumes on Friday.

Here were some of the coach and player reactions after the game:

Spurs Assistant Coach Will Hardy:

(On being ready for the eight seeding games and Keldon Johnson’s performance tonight…)

“I think we’re definitely more ready than when we got here. Everybody’s been getting back into game shape. We weren’t allowed to do any contact until we got here to Orlando. The guys are getting better each day and practices have been great. Keldon tonight was special with his energy. He’s a really hard-working kid and brings a spark of energy and life when he comes off the bench. His defense tonight, him getting out in transition was huge for us.”

(On Keldon Johnson’s energy contributing to his playing time…)

“Absolutely. He brings that energy and tenacity every time he plays. We would much rather have to try to rein somebody in energy wise than try to pump them up. It’s definitely one of his best traits right now as a young player. His energy and competing on the defensive end is what’s going to help him get some time.”

(On the team’s interior defense tonight...)

“Our group did a good job tonight of scrambling to protect the paint. It starts with our five men, Jakob [Poeltl] and Drew [Eubanks] and Rudy [Gay] for a brief period there did a really nice job protecting the rim, Chimezie Metu at the end of the game. It was a group effort tonight trying to be there on the weak side. Something we’ve worked on in practice while we’ve been here. Tonight was probably our best night of carryover of that.”

(On the impact Dejounte Murray and Derrick White had tonight…)

“They’re good basketball players. They can participate in a game in a lot of different areas. Shooting is not going to define their impact on a game as you saw tonight. They’re versatile defensively, both good playmakers. I thought they made great decisions tonight for themselves and for their teammates. Personally, their shots didn’t fall tonight, but they really helped get our offense going and set the tone for us defensively.”

Spurs Forward Rudy Gay:

(On the team’s goal in the bubble…)

“Just take it one game at a time and see where we go from there. Our goal is to win every game in front of us. Obviously, it’s going to be tougher than it sounds, but that’s going to be our goal.”

(On wearing a Patty Mills’ ‘We Got You’ campaign shirt…)

“Yeah it is. I’ve been reading up on the campaign and knowing Patty and the type of person he is, I’ll always support him.”
