Simone Biles is prioritizing her mental health over the Summer Olympics. The world's number-one women's gymnast announced she will not defend her gold medal in the individual all-around on Thursday. She'd been the overwhelming favorite to repeat as champion.
The American superstar had previously withdrawn from Tuesday's team gymnastics final due to mental health reasons, later putting the media on notice that she wasn't sure about competing tomorrow.
Following today's announcement, USA Gymnastics issued a statement saying "We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being." It went on to say, "Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
