Colin Cowherd Calls Luka 'Very Flawed', Compares Him to Carmelo Anthony

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd discuss Luka Doncic’s unraveling 2024 NBA Finals and explain how the Celtics are exposing a ‘very flawed’ player in Doncic, who could soon gain the reputation of Carmelo Anthony as an elite scorer who will never win rings.

Check out the segment below as Colin expresses his concerns about the negative reputation that Doncic may be branded with for the rest of his career if the Mavericks are swept by the Celtics.

Colin Cowherd: “When there is a little pressure added to life, the truth comes out. The truth is, when I compared Luka to Carmelo Anthony, it sort of looks like it, doesn’t it? A very flawed star. He’s better than Carmelo but a very flawed star. All the deficiencies for Luka are coming out in the Finals. 1) he never stops complaining to refs. It hurts his team. He’s on the floor complaining and there go the Celtics down the other end. It happened twice last night. 2) he’s been awful defensively in this series. There’s data that he might be the worst defensive player in the Finals in a decade. 3) like all great scorers, when sh*t hits the fans, he becomes iso-ball guy and doesn’t play well with others. The Mavs only had 15 assists. They’re almost getting doubled in assists this series.
Luka is an all-time talent, but he’s not a late-bloomer. He was an all-time talent at 15 years old. He has been lauded; he has been worshiped – is he not amenable to change? Is he adaptable? To be a champion, and Michael Jordan figured this out, you gotta look yourself in the mirror. Michael Jordan looked at himself in the mirror and said ‘I can score 60 and not win titles, or trust my teammates.’ Phil Jackson talked him into trusting his teammates and Michael became a champion. LeBron James was physically elite his first day in the league, but eventually he had to learn how to shoot a three and add layers to his game so it wasn’t just about his physical superiority.
I’m watching Luka unravel last night and get flustered. You can’t do that against the Celtics. The Celtics are smart and will get into your head. They were toying with the younger Mavericks last night. If you melt down in the Finals, it will stick with you until you win a Finals. Magic Johnson had an awful Finals and was called ‘Tragic’ Johnson in 1984. He had to eventually win for that to disappear. LeBron James was terrified to have the basketball against Dallas and was ridiculed, mocked, and laughed at until he won the next year. This is gonna stick with Luka. He’s been awful defensively and has been totally disengaged defensively. He’s constantly melting down with officials, and not engaging other teammates. A sweep by the Celtics will stick to him. You’ve got five fouls as a bad defensive player, and you’re trying to draw a charge? What are you doing??
